Students from the Digital Journalism program at City College were among the 4,000-plus graduates district-wide, many of whom were honored at the 2019 commencement at the San Diego Convention Center on May 25.
Five current and past City Times editors — Jonny Rico, Jen Souza, David Ahumada, Diangela Veras and Marissa Gonzales — were among those who walked across the stage before a packed ballroom filled with family and friends.
For professor and City Times adviser Nicole Vargas, the graduating students were among the first to enroll in her classes when she started shortly before the fall 2018 semester.
“I could not be more grateful for the commitment of this group of students to our program,” Vargas said. “I am so proud of the work they did, and I know they will be successful wherever their path leads them.”

Rico is planning to continue his education at Sacramento State, while Souza, Ahumada and Gonzales are all set to attend San Diego State in the fall. Gonzales, who was also a veteran member of Newscene at City College, was the subject of an article in the commencement edition of the City Times.
